Frequently Asked Questions

Why did we decide to build a cooperative grocery store instead of brining a chain grocerystore?

We haven’t had chain grocers interested. That’s something that makes co-ops so cool – people coming together to make something for themselves.

Why are we focused on the Northside?

The Northside has low food access (USDA calls it a food desert) – there hasn’t been a full service grocery store in the Northside in over 30 years.

Can only Northside residents become members and participate in events?

The co-op is open to everyone! That’s one of the principles of cooperative organizations. Everyone can be a part of them.

Do you have to be a member to shop at the Co-op or participate in events?

Nope – open to all. Members will eventually receive benefits in the store. And right now, members are moving the co-op forward. We’re the ones making it happen!

Why would I become a member before the store opens?

Members are the vision + the dream – the community gets to speak into what this looks like and what we need our store to be. And, we’ll need to show community investment to show viability as we move through the process. If you’re a Northsider, this is our opportunity to impact development in our community.

What kind of food will be at the store?

Fresh foods (fresh produce, meat, dairy, seafood, and prepared foods) A blend of locally produced, organic, natural, and clean/conventional foods Focused on finding the balance between providing affordability and local and conventional items

Will I be able to afford to shop at this store?

We hope so! The Co-op is focused on affordability and exploring how to make the store and its products affordable
