The average germination period for a seed is typically between 1 and 3 weeks. During this time, the seed absorbs the water and enzymes that allow it to spread its roots and grow its leaves. Every factor – from temperature to the amount of light or quality of the soil – is crucial in preparing the seedling for the next stages of its life. This is similar to the way humans require a period of preparation to grow into who we are supposed to be.
What would happen if a seedling did not get the amount of sunlight it needed to grow? Or if the soil was too rocky and dry? Or if it was left for days without water? Such an environment would make it difficult for the seed to grow and thrive.
At first, the solution seems simple. Just move the plant to a different pot! Only you cannot. The seed has roots in the soil and it must stay where it is. It may be easier for the gardener to abandon the seed entirely, deciding to focus its energy on tending to the other plants that have no problem growing and bearing flowers.
What if, given the proper care, that seed was destined to bloom? Perhaps with a little additional care and consideration, every seed in the garden would have an equal chance at growing tall and strong.
In a community, every small action adds up to contribute to the bigger picture. The passing conversations you share with your neighbor could be a reason for them to get out of bed. The lady you helped carry groceries for may be struggling with mental illness. Every time you engage in community, you are planting seeds. The more you interact, the more you are doing to tend the garden.
We were not all given the proper environments to develop as children. As a community, our words, actions, and involvement can help to create a brighter future for ourselves, our neighbors, and the generations to come. With February being the month of love, as well as a time for remembrance of those who helped to pioneer the future we are able to experience now, make an effort to plant small seeds of goodness in your community. You never know what may bloom just because you decided to spread kindness and care.
“Every[time] you plant a seed in the ground, you gotta have faith that that seed is gonna come up.”
